And I think that distance actually helps me see maybe what could be a classic in another genre. I think I'm, in a way, a good person to answer this question not only because it lines up with my sort of "age group" well (being late millennial - '93), but because I am not a big John Mayer fan. I’d argue waaay more than Heavier Things (and I think that’s great, too haha). I still think he should and could build on that Trio angle, but the Continuum songs really hold up. I also don’t hold it against those songs that he didn’t try and make a blues album ala Trio. I think he recognized that, too, through the acoustic detours that followed. I agree Mayer can be maudlin but I would argue that it didn’t quite cross that threshold until Battle Studies, which I would call a magnification of all his worst instincts that Continuum may have hints of.Ĭontinuum’s emotional angle comes off as earnest to me, whereas Battle Studies often feels calculated and contrived and somehow reflects the Hollywood/TMZ/Jessica Simpson/Playboy fluff of that time. Those versions of Slow Dancing In A Burning Room, I Dont Trust Myself., In Repair, Belief, I’m Gonna Find Another You, Stop This Train, Heart Of Life! I’d spin those any day! Room For Squares era Any Given Thursday is pretty rough, in retrospect. I think it also benefited from the media blitz of the Trio that proceeded it, and from the Trio generally (and they’re in that concert).Īnd I say that about Where The Light Is over more recent stuff because he retained enough youthful scrappiness and had worked out all the kinks, especially vocally. maybe it’s not based on the studio album strength alone but more that era and people seeing him from all sides. In the popular consciousness he went from promising college coffeeshop Dave Matthewsy “Body Is Wonderland / Why Georgia” guy, to the “Daughters” guy (bypassing the rest of that album almost entirely) to Continuum. He really tied all the disparate threads of his music together at that time and achieved escape velocity in terms of sales and exposure. I think that concert with the three mini-concerts in one could be the key to understanding why Continuum gets the nods, though. So in that sense I agree maybe the production is too safe. I love Continuum sort of by association - Where The Light Is is the best incarnation of John Mayer live and they’re generally of the same era. I think the songs on Continuum really shine live (Bold as Love is weak I agree - I came around on his later cover of Crossroads, though). That said, I actually like Room for Squares way more as you seem to. I suggested you guys do Continuum in another thread here - I was interested to hear your takes on it.
